Portland Public Library will open the exhibit “Through Her Lens: Women Photographers of Midcoast Maine, 1885–1925” in its Lewis Gallery with a reception on Friday, April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The show will continue through April 29.
The show, much of it drawn from the permanent collections of Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, presents the work of five women photographers, both amateur and professional, all born in the latter half of the 19th century in the area between Boothbay and Blue Hill. The pictures reflect women’s shifting roles in public and domestic life during an era of great social change.
“Through Her Lens” can also be viewed online with audio commentary at www.penobscotmarinemuseum.org/magic-of-photography/through-her-lens.
