Thursday, March 16, 2017 2:12 PM
Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education will offer both a basic and an intermediate American Sign Language class for young adults and older, both starting on Wednesday, April 5, at Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport. Instructor Carrie Pierce is certified by the American Sign Language Teachers Association and the State of Maine (for Early Childhood Special Education and Deaf Education), and travels all over the state teaching ASL in schools and universities.
American Sign Language 1: For Everyone meets on eight Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. (no class on April 19). The class will introduce basic signing, no voice will be used.
American Sign Language 2: Intermediate meets on eight Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (no class on April 19). Enrollment requires at least 12 hours’ prior experience with a certified deaf instructor. The class will build on ASL 1, using games and other activities to add vocabulary and grammar skills, how to ask questions, tell time and sign with numbers. There may be an opportunity for interaction with members of the deaf community.
