Merryspring Talk on Return of Spruce Budworm
Thursday, March 16, 2017 3:34 PM
Merryspring Nature Center will present “Is the Spruce Budworm a Returning Threat?,” a talk by Allison Kanoti, on Tuesday, March 21, from noon to 1 p.m.
The spruce budworm, a native moth, feeds exclusively on balsam fir and spruce trees. It is considered one of the most destructive forest insect species in North America. Kanoti, a forest entomologist with Maine Forest Service, will discuss the budworm’s life cycle, how it can be managed, why scientists believe we are due for another large outbreak, and what it could mean for Maine’s timber and forest recreation industries.
Admission to the program is $5 per person, free for Merryspring members. Merryspring is located at the end of Conway Road, just off Route 1 in Camden behind Hannaford Shopping Plaza.
