An effort to rid the town of its police force gained steam in June when residents cut the Lincolnville public safety budget, leaving just the police chief position in place.

On election day, a petition to change the Lincolnville Town Charter from requiring the town to have a police force to making it optional gathered enough signatures to take the question in front of town voters. Between 300 and 400 people signed the petition, according to Cathy Hardy, who spearheaded the effort.
